CHARLES CITY — Sometimes you’ve got to draw a line in the sand.

And usually that sometimes is now for the Comet Bowl Sand Volleyball League

With only two weeks left in the season with Aug. 9 of the Thursday night league serving as the final position round, the 11-team league has been split into two divisions.

The “Red” division consists of the top six placing team in the first-half standings; the “Blue” division consists of the bottom five.

With divisions drawn, teams play only those of their same division to keep matches competitive. During position-round night, first- and second-place teams from each division will square off for respective titles. Though it was suggested to include an added match between the “Red” champion and the “Blue” champion for the ultimate league championship, that would likely only happen if both teams are willing to play in such a match.

So far this season, Team 6 is undefeated and is currently in first place in the Red division. Last year, Team 6 was the league’s regular-season champs but lost to the upstart Francisco’s in the seeded end-of-season tournament the league employed last year.

The league plays in the sand volleyball pit in back of the bowling alley. With Comet Bowl up for sale, it’s conceivable that this could be the final sand volleyball season at the site.

But current Comet Bowl owner and league “commissioner” Mark Barry assures, “About this time next year, I see us all being back here again.”
