Comets Connell, Sibuma, relay teams off to fast start

Photo by John Burbridge Charles City sophomore Kiki Connell won her first outdoor track race of the season while recording a time of 11 minutes, 8 seconds in the 3,000-meter run during Thursday’s Co-ed Varsity Track and Field Invitational hosted by Waverly-Shell Rock. Last season Connell was a state-qualifier as well as a Drake Relays qualifier in the 3,000. The Comet girls also got wins from their 4-by-800 relay team of Mackenzy Bilharz, Marley Hagarty, Ashlyn Hoeft and Whitney Martin (10:51.51), and their 4-by-400 relay team of Alex Litterer, Lydia Staudt, Martin and Sami Heyer (4:20.85) while placing second with 100.5 points to team champions Waverly-Shell Rock (111 points). The Comet boys placed third in their meet as they were aided by first-place performances from Bradley Andrews in the high jump (6-feet), and John Sibuma in the 200 dash (24.72). A more complete list of Charles City placers will appear in Monday’s edition of the Charles City Press.
