Comets 2-0 through 3 rounds of NEIC Volleyball Tournament
Press Staff Report
NEW HAMPTON — The Charles City Comets got off to a fast start at the Northeast Iowa Conference Volleyball Tournament with a pair of quick straight-set wins while going 2-0 through the first three rounds of the round-robin format.
New Hampton hosted the first three rounds; Oelwein will host the latter four rounds on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
In their first match, Charles City had little trouble with Waukon.
The second match against Oelwein was a little more competitive, but the Comets were never really threatened during a pair of 21-13 set wins.
The Comets, who finished third in the NEIC by way of their 4-2 record during official conference matches, will likely face tougher tests Saturday when they face regular-season conference champion and Class 4A No. 8-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock; conference runner-up Decorah; New Hampton and Crestwood.
During the regular season, the Comets had beaten Decorah during a season-opening tournament at Comet Gym, but later lost to the Vikings in a five-game standard match.
Charles City swept both New Hampton in New Hampton and Crestwood in Cresco during the regular season.
The Comets were swept by Waverly-Shell Rock in Comet Gym in the lone previous meeting.
