Charles City’ Jeremiah Chapman drives to the basket before getting fouled by Crestwood’s Reid Wiley. The resulting three-point play drew the Comets within a possession of the Cadets with a little more than three minutes left in regulation after trailing by multiple possessions during most of Friday’s Northeast Iowa Conference game. The Comets had some chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute, but the Cadets held on to win 70-67.

CHARLES CITY — Basketball games often come down to free throws.

When Charles City junior Chase Low stepped to the free throw line in the final seconds of Friday’s Northeast Iowa Conference contest against Crestwood with the game on the line, he needed to … miss.

With the Cadets up 69-66 with a little more than 5 seconds left, Low hit the first end of the double-bonus to draw the Comets within 2. With one more made free throw likely not being enough, Low opted for a line-drive attempt off the front of the rim with the hopes for an offensive rebound and putback for the tie.

But a FT lane violation called on the Comets negated the ploy helping the Cadets hold on to win 70-67.

Reid Wiley led all scorers for the Cadets with 22 points, helping his team win its seventh straight. Crestwood is now 11-4 overall and 8-2 in the NEIC which puts it in the thick of it with Decorah and Waukon for league championship honors heading down the homestretch of the regular season.

Charles City (6-11, 3-7) suffered its fourth-straight loss despite a season-high 18 points from Ian Collins, 17 points from Low, 16 points from JJ Ritter and 13 points from Jeremiah Chapman.

The Comet boys will host New Hampton on Tuesday before traveling to Crestwood on Friday to close out their NEIC schedule.

In the previous junior varsity game between the two schools, the Comets were held to just 11 points midway through the third quarter before coming to life offensively thanks in part to their defense creating turnovers in Crestwood’s back court.

With 20 seconds left in regulation, the Comets had a chance to tie the game with a 3-point shot attempt that rimmed out as Crestwood’s JV prevailed 53-49.

* Charles City’s girls were able to snap a 14-game losing streak while claiming their first victory on the road with a 53-47 win over Crestwood.

The Comet girls were .500 through the first four games of the season, but injuries to key players left them in the lurch for subsequent games that included state-ranked opponents.

Charles City (3-16, 2-9) will try to finish the regular season with another road win when it takes on New Hampton on Tuesday.
