CHARLES CITY — Sometimes a player needs to shoulder the bulk of the offense if he wants to get his team back in the game.

You also may need some wide shoulders to do that.

New Hampton senior Drake Wemark not only has a quick first step, he also has the upper-body size to shield his shots from blockers while drawing fouls as a bonus, especially when working along the baseline under the basket.

Wemark scored most of his game-high 33 points in the second half while helping the Chickasaws erase several double-digit deficits to force overtime and eventually defeat the hosting Charles City Comets 74-66 in Northeast Iowa Conference boys basketball action on Friday.

The Comets led throughout most of regulation but were quickly down by 6 in overtime due in part to several turnovers that were cashed into points. That essentially forced Charles City into a must-foul situation less than two minutes into the three-minute added period.

Charles City boasted four players with double-figure scoring — Chase Low (25), Mario Hoefer (14) … Hoefer also had several assists (6), several nifty no-look dishes, Jose Hernandez (11) and Jack Hanson (10).

Gannon Shekleton (15), Cael Laures (12) and Carter Steinladge (11) reached double-figures for New Hampton (9-9, 5-5 NEIC).

In the previous girls game, Charles City senior Lydia Staudt led all scorers with 23 points — a pretty mean feat in a game against New Hampton scoring machine Carlee Rochford, who had 22 for the Chickasaws.

Staudt’s 3-pointer tied the game at 21 shortly before halftime and later helped the Comets take a 6-point lead early in the second half.

But New Hampton went on to outscore Charles City 31-18 in the second half on way to winning 52-39.

One area the winless Comets have improved vastly from the start of the season is taking care of the ball as they have limited their turnovers considerably as of late — especially when confronted with full-court presses.

They were doing a good job against the Chickasaws until a rash of turnovers in the latter part of the game allowed the visitors to break free from their pesky hosts.

* On Saturday, the Comet boys fell to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in the NEIC when they lost to the Class 3A No. 1-ranked Decorah Vikings 80-58.

* On Monday, the Comet girls played their final home game of the season while hosting Decorah.

Though the game was a little closer than the one played between the two teams the week before, the Vikings won big in a 69-39 final.

Sophomore Yazmeen Whitsitt scored a game-high 33 points for the victors. Kylie O’Hara (12 pts.), Haley Gossman (10), Bryar Duwe (8), Annika Franzen (5) and Madelyn Fromm (2) rounded out the scoring for Decorah (13-6, 8-1 Northeast Iowa Conference).

Charles City (0-18, 0-9) was led by Lydia Staudt (14 pts.) with Ava Ellis (8) , Delaney Ruzicka (5), Lauren Staudt (5), Maggie Boss (3), Keely Collins (2) and Jadyn VanHorn (2) rounding out the scoring for the Comets, who will conclude regular-season play in Tuesday’s varsity doubleheader at Waukon.
