North Butler’s Chet Buss wins third-straight state wrestling title

DES MOINES — The only thing that will stop this Buss from annually running roughshod through the Class 1A heavyweight bracket at the State Wrestling Championships is his pending graduation.
About this time next year, NBC senior Chet Buss will be a member of the Northern Iowa wrestling team which means his prep reign will finally be over.
On Saturday in the final round of the Traditional Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena, Buss won his third-straight Class 1A 285 title by pinning Logan-Magnolia’s Rex Johnson at the 3:45 mark in the championship match. It capped yet another undefeated season for Buss, this time at 52-0 as only one of his victories this season didn’t end with a fall stoppage.
Since being stopped short of the state meet his freshman season, Buss has gone on a remarkable undefeated run (141-0) in the latter three seasons of his high school career.
Including Buss, the Bearcats boasted four podium-placing wrestlers at this year’s tournament, including sophomores Tanner Arjes (5th 126) and Makade Bloker (5th 170), and senior Kolben Miller (7th 195).
The Bearcats placed seventh in team scoring (65 team points), a place below Top of Iowa-East Conference nearby neighbor Nashua-Plainfield (68.5).
Earlier in the week, the Huskies placed seventh at the State Team Dual Tournament after a late run by Logan-Magnolia resulting in a 41-40 win in the quarterfinals knocked N-P to the consolation rounds.
Five of the six wrestlers Nashua-Plainfield qualified to the State Traditional Tournament earned “Grand March” distinction while finishing in the Top 8.
Most notably, Husky junior 120-pounder Garrett Rinken advanced to the championship match of his bracket before dropping a 7-3 decision to Lisbon’s Brandon Perez. For Rinken, it was his only loss in 55 bouts this season.
Husky freshman Jayden Rinken placed third in the 106-pound bracket at his first state championships.
Senior 138-pounder Trey Nelson placed fifth, senior 152-pounder McKade Munn placed seventh, junior 126-pounder Kendrick Huck placed eighth, and freshman 113-pounder Nic Brase went 1-2 in his bracket for the Huskies.
Don Bosco, who won the Team Dual Championships, was the highest scoring Class 1A team at the Traditional Championships with 161.5 team points.
