WAUKON — Charles City sophomore Claire Girkin earned medalist honors for the first time in her varsity golf career when she shot a nine-hole score of 52 while leading the Comets to a meet win during Friday’s girls triangular at Waukon Golf and Country Club.

With Olivia Kreger (60), Brinn Lahr (63) and Shelby Effle (64) rounding out Charles City’s season-best nine-hole team scoring (239), it proved to be 4 strokes better than South Winneshiek, which was led by runner-up medalist Katrina Hageman (54).

The hosting Indians didn’t field a full team.

Also on Friday, the Comet boys hosted a Northeast Iowa Conference 18-hole quadrangular at Cedar Ridge Golf Course.

Waverly-Shell Rock, led by Hogan Hansen’s medalist score of 74 as well as top-four scores from Luke Franzell (81) and Cole Hotz (82), were the overwhelming victors with a team score of 327.

Decorah placed second (368), Charles City — with Carson Gallup’s co-runner-up score of 81 and Trevor White carding an 83 — placed third (373), 2 strokes ahead of New Hampton (375).

* On Monday, Trevor White shot a 1-under medalist score of 35 while matching his career varsity nine-hole low while leading the Comets to a 32-stroke win over Crestwood at Cedar Ridge.

With Jaxon Daniels also shooting a career-low 39, and Carson Gallup and Calvin Hanson carding respective scores of 42 and 45, the Comets shot 161 as a team — a season-low in nine-hole matches.

Charles City’s junior varsity boys team also was victorious over Crestwood (191 to 227) with Nick Prior (45), Gage Kilby (46), Riley Perez (48) and Isaak Houdek (52) rounding out the Comet JV scoring.

Meanwhile on Cedar Ridge’s back nine, a Northeast Iowa Conference girls quadrangular took place with New Hampton, behind medalist Lydia Olson (44) and medalist runner-up Sanja Noehl (45), winning with a team score of 193.

Waverly-Shell Rock, with Brenna Bodensteiner’s 49 score, was second (208).

Shelby Effle carded a 60 for the third-place hosting Comets (263), who finished 2 strokes better than Crestwood.
