Comet netters stopped at singles/doubles regional

WAVERLY — Representative players from Charles City were eliminated in the Class 1A Singles and Doubles Tennis Regionals, Wednesday in matches played at Waverly-Shell Rock and Wartburg College.

Charles City junior Sophia Jensen got off to a good start in her opening-round singles match against Brooklyn Brock of Osage, winning the first set 6-3. But Brock responded with a 6-3 second-set win before advancing by winning the tiebreaker 10-6.

Junior Katie Prichard, who has been the Comets’ primary No. 1 singles player this season, lost to Decorah’s Kristi Kjome-Johnson 6-5, 6-2 in her first-round singles match. Kjome-Johnson would eventually take third in the singles bracket.

Regional singles champion Elly Wood of Iowa Falls-Alden and runner-up Allison Pavlovec of Decorah both advance to the Class 1A State Singles Championship.

Charles City’s doubles team of Liz Oleson and Maggie Boss lost a pair of competitive sets (8-6, 6-4) while being stopped in the first round against St. Edmond’s Klara Baker and Lauren Gibb.

Charles City sophomores Rylee DeBoest and Hannah Hoffman lost a “play-in” match against Decorah’s Evon Leitz and Haley Gossman 6-1, 6-2.

Decorah’s other doubles team — Camryn Holland and Annalise Skrade — won the doubles bracket after defeating fellow state-qualifiers Kaitlyn Olson and Kendall Olson of Osage 6-2, 6-3 in the championship match.

The Class 1A Tennis Team Regionals are due to take place Saturday in Waverly. Charles City is set to face the hosts Go-Hawks in the first round.
