WAVERLY — Yogi Berra is famous for claiming “It’s not over until it’s over.”
Unfortunately for Charles City sophomore Hannah Hoffman, her season ended just as she was mounting a comeback.
After losing the first set to her Waverly-Shell Rock opponent during Saturday’s Class 1A Girls Tennis Team Regionals, Hoffman was leading 5-3 in the second set. But before she had a chance to force a tiebreaker, the match was stopped because the Go-Hawks had won their fifth and deciding match to advance past the second round.
“Once a team reaches five wins (out of nine matches), they stop play,” Charles City head coach Brian Parrott said.
The Go-Hawks later lost to Aplington-Parkersburg in the semifinal. The Falcons are set to play Decorah for the Region 1 Team Championship, Saturday at 9 a.m. at Luther College.
After losing 12 seniors from last year’s team, Parrott was pleased on how his young team performed this past season as the Comets were .500 in dual-meet play.
“And it’s encouraging to know that most of them plan on playing a lot of tennis this summer,” Parrott said. “They’ve seen what it takes to beat the better teams.”
