Getting a 1-2-3 inning in slowpitch softball is about as rare as turning a tripleplay. But while nursing a 1-run lead going into the seventh inning in what proved to be the Championship Game of the Charles City Men’s Softball League Double-Elimination Tournament, Empire was able to send the ThunderCats down in order while winning in a 24-23 final last Wednesday at Westwood Park.
It was the second-straight tournament championship for Empire, which maintains ownership of the league’s travelling Championship Cup. Dustin Utez from Empire was name Tournament MVP. Empire also was the league’s regular-season champion.
