Charles City’s Jadyn Van Horn (No. 9) and Emma Miller (No. 4) go up to successfully thwart a killing attempt by Waterloo Christian’s Reagan Wheeler. It was the winning match point capping a 2-set sweep for the Comets — the first Charles City victory of the 2022-23 school year — who hosted the Regents as well as Saint Ansgar during Tuesday’s season-opening volleyball triangular.

CHARLES CITY — During the prologue of Casino Royale, the bent MI6 station chief assures James Bond that the second registered kill — a requirement for 007 status — is much easier than the first.

The Charles City Comets got a double-kill, meaning a pair of match victories, when hosting a volleyball triangular to open the season, Tuesday at Comet Gym.

But the second one proved to be a little more difficult.

Charles City began the evening by defeating Waterloo Christian in straight sets (25-18, 25-21).

Then in the triangular finale against Saint Ansgar, the Comets were forced to play a tie-breaker set before dispatching the Saints (25-15, 20-25, 15-11).

The wins represent the first varsity sport victories for Charles City for the 2022-23 school year.

Against the Regents, the Comets got 10 assists from sophomore Anya Ruzicka and 5 kills and 2 blocks from sophomore Jadyn Van Horn — her second block against WC’s Reagan Wheeler was the match winner.

Against the Saints, Comet junior Keely Collins had 8 kills, senior Morgan Maloy had 10 assists and sophomore Mya Rimrod had 8 digs.

In the middle match of the evening, Saint Ansgar defeated Waterloo Christian in straight sets (25-15, 25-21).

Charles City will host a tournament on Saturday which will include participating teams from Iowa Falls-Alden, Mason City, Decorah and Hampton-Dumont.

* During Thursday’s quadrangular at the Cyclone Center in Denver, the Comets picked up another pair of wins by defeating Northeast Iowa Conference rival New Hampton in straight sets (25-16, 25-17), and then coming from behind to defeat Denver (11-25, 25-23, 15-12).

But Charles City was unable to leave the center unscathed as Lisbon inflicted the Comets with their first loss of the season with a straight-set 25-11, 25-22 victory.
