Comet girls wrestling team hosts Decorah during ‘Senior Night’

CHARLES CITY — In some ways the Charles City girls wrestling team’s senior class is a historic senior class.
Then again, you can say that about all the female wrestling teams participating during the first sanctioned season of girls high school wrestling in Iowa.
What distinguishes the Comets’ senior class from most others is its resident two-time state champion Lilly Luft, who will continue her wrestling career at the University of Iowa.
Luft and senior teammates Katie Miller, Morgan Maloy and Liz Oleson were honored Friday in Charles City’s old high school gym as part of “Senior Night” ahead of a dual meet against Decorah that was originally scheduled for Thursday before being postponed by the heavy mid-week snowfall.
Though Charles City was forced to forfeit four matches due to open spots amid their lineup, three CC seniors saw action against the Vikings and came away with three victories in a meet which Decorah won 45-18.
In the 135-pound match, Luft kept her undefeated season intact despite a game effort from Decorah’s Anastasia Simmon. Luft won the decision (10-5), but Simmon was able to record a reversal in the second period to pull within 2 (5-3) and got the visiting crowd on its feet when she momentarily had Luft in a “near” near-fall position.
Oleson was also victorious in her last home meet, but it wasn’t easy against McKenzie Tollefson in the 140-pound match.
In the third period, Tollefson recorded a reversal to tie the match at 5-5. With less than 30 seconds in regulation, Oleson escaped to a 6-5 lead and maintained that advantage for the win.
In the following 145-pound match, Maloy was able to pin Amelia Wadsworth 2:53 into their bout despite Wadsworth’s defiant arcing bridge guard from a supine position.
Miller was awarded a forfeit win at 125.
Decorah’s Skyla Jevne was able to record a takedown late in the third period to defeat Charles City junior and two-time state podium placer Ava Thompson 4-2 in the 235-pound match.
Kaitlyn Bjork pinned Charles City’s Tegan Cavanaugh right at the 5-minute mark of their 115-pound bout, which ended the meet.
Ashley Bjork pinned Kylie Blunt 47 seconds into the 130-pound match; Lauren Luzum pinned Nyssa Salinas 1:28 into the 155-pound match; Kamryn Steines pinned Savannah Baldus 1:12 into the 170-pound match; and Naomi Simon pinned Leah Stewart 1:27 into the 190-pound match.
