Comet bowlers sweep Panthers on the road

Press Staff Report

TRIPOLI — Just when Claire Girkin was starting to make herself a competent southpaw, she switched back to being a right-handed roller again.

The Charles City junior was the Comets girls team top bowler last season. This season, due to right shoulder surgery, recovery and rehab, Girkin started the season bowling left-handed and even managed to record a team-high two-game series during a meet.

Now, Girkin is back to bowling right handed again. And against Tripoli on the road at Panther Lanes last Friday, Girkin paced all female bowlers with a 367 two-game series while leading the Comets to a one-sided 2,328 to 1,530 dual-meet victory.

With Imigin McHenry (364), Isabelle Crawford (331) Aliya Elsbury (313) and Payton Handley (286), the Comets won their fifth out of the past six meets while improving to 5-3 for the season.

The Comet boys team got back to .500 (4-4) with a 2,626 to 2,436 win over the Panthers.

Shayne Groesbeck led the way for the Comets with a 355 two-game series followed by Chris Tull (349), Xander Graeser (348), Keaton Ross (347) and Sullivan Gerleman (288).

Tyler Reeves shot a meet-high 361 series for the Panthers (3-5).

The Comet boys and girls are due to participate in the Conference Meet on Wednesday starting at 10 a.m. at Cadillac Lanes.

Charles City will host Forest City at 4 p.m. Friday at Comet Bowl. It will be the Comets’ “Senior Night”.
