Comet girl bowlers finish regular season with highest team pinfall

Press Staff Report

BUFFALO CENTER — The Charles City girls bowling team finished the regular season with its greatest total pinfall of the said season while defeating North Iowa on the road, 2,525 to 2,119, on Friday.

It capped the Comets’ dual-meet record to 7-3 while besting the team’s previous season-best — achieved the week before in a home win against Forest City — by 80 pins.

Sophomore Isabell Crawford rolled a personal-record two-game series of 433 while leading the Comets in the Individual Round.

Senior Imigin McHenry also recorded a PR two-game score (405) with junior Claire Girkin (340), sophomore Payton Hadley (297) and junior Jenya Stevenson (296) rounding out the individual scoring for the Comets.

With the Comet boys defeating the Bison 2,522 to 2,196, it was the first time in program history that a Charles City girls team produced a greater overall score than the Comet boys during a simultaneous double-varsity dual meet according to Doug Bohlen, who has been Charles City’s head coach since the school started a bowling program in 2015.

Leading the way for Charles City’s boys in the Individual Round were freshman Jayden Lopez (395), Shayne Groesbeck (346), Cole Jones (341), Keaton Ross (333) and Sullivan Gerleman (309).

Charles City’s boys and girls will be back in action this Thursday (Feb. 9) for a Baker Rotation tournament hosted by Independence at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo — rescheduled from Jan. 28.

At a previous Baker Rotation Conference/District Tournament (Jan. 25) held at the same site and including several of the same teams, the Comet girls emerged as the champions with the Comet boys placing third.
