Comet netters defeat Green Devils in regional first round, eliminated by Vikings in semifinals

DECORAH — Sometimes, it is better to go up against the devil you know … or the Green Devils you know.

The Charles City Comets girls tennis team drew Osage in the first round of the Class 1A Regional Team Tournament hosted by Decorah on Saturday.

The Comets had played the Green Devils twice this season, and in both dual matches Osage got the best of a close 5-4 meet score.

But in their third meeting of the season, it was the Comets who prevailed 5-4.

With the teams locked up at 4 match wins apiece, it came down to the Comets’ No. 2 doubles team of Maggie Boss and Liz Oleson finally dispatching of Brooklyn Brock and Claudia Aschenbrenner 6-2, 7-5 to clinch it.

Boss and Oleson had earlier endured tiebreaker sets in their singles matches against the Green Devils.

Boss, a junior, was able to defeat Kyle Tabbert 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 TB at No. 5 singles; Oleson, a senior, lost to Brock 7-6, 1-6 10-7 TB at No. 3 singles.

Charles City’s No. 3 doubles team of Hannah Hoffman and Rylee DeBoest, who recently won their bracket during the North Central Tennis Conference Meet, defeated Sue Meier and Tabbert 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday.

Earlier, Hoffman defeated Meier 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles, and DeBoest defeated Aschenbrenner 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

Osage juniors Kaitlyn Olson and Kendall Olson, both of whom advanced to state by finishing runner-up in the regional doubles tournament, respectively defeated Katie Prichard 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Sophia Jensen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

The Olsons also defeated Prichard and Jensen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Later in the team regional semifinals, eventual champion Decorah was declared the winner over Charles City when the Vikings went up 5-0 in match play, resulting in the stoppage of further play.
