CHARLES CITY — At times during the past basketball season, the Comets were in need of a “3-ball”.

And they often got one or several from their resident outside threat, senior Brennan Schmidt.

In the final moments of Charles City’s home-opener baseball game against Mason City on Wednesday, the Comets were again hoping for Schmidt to launch a long-range three.

The Riverhawks were leading 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh. With the Comets down to their last out, lead-off hitter Schmidt stepped to the plate as the tying run with two teammates aboard.

At the sound of the ball “clinking” off Schmidt’s bat, you got that “it might be” feeling. But Schmidt took the fastball of MC starter Breyden Baker to one of the deeper parts of Comet Diamond in left-center field and put a lot of air under it.

Riverhawk center fielder Ethen Roberts, who had thrown a no-hitter for Mason City in its season-opening win against Clear Lake the night before, drifted back further than he anticipated and was able to snare Schmidt’s long out to end the game.

Baker got the complete-game victory after striking out 10, walking five and yielding three hits; and Jake Gold with 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBI’s for Mason City (2-0).

Charles City southpaw senior Lincoln Joslin, who is due to continue his baseball career at Iowa Lakes, was tabbed with the loss after striking out 10, walking three, and yielding four hits in five-and-a-third innings as only 1 of the 3 runs scored off him was earned.

Joslin also had two of the three Comet hits. His hard-hit liner in the third inning ate up Mason City’s second baseman allowing Jackson Ruzicka to score from second base to tie the game at 1-1.

Joslin is currently hitting .500 for the Comets after two games.

Tuesday against Algona on the road, Joslin was 2 for 5 with a double and 3 RBIs while leading the Comets’ to a 3-2 season-opening win over the Bulldogs.

Senior Kayden Blunt got the win after striking out 12 in five shutout innings pitched for the Comets (1-1), who will host Independence next Tuesday (May 23).
