Nick Williams paces Comet boys to Central XC Invite title

ELKADER — The Charles City Comets boys cross country team placed four runners in the Top 10 while winning last Thursday’s Central Elkader Invitational by a wide margin.

Junior Nick Williams paced the Varsity Boys 5K with a time of 16 minutes, 47.9 seconds — little more than 2 seconds shy of his personal-record.

With fellow junior two-time state-qualifier Xander Graeser placeing third (17:15.0), less than a second ahead of Comet senior teammate Isaac Thompson (17:15.9), who bettered his best time from last season by 30 seconds.

Senior Lukas Vance placed 10th (18:29.6) and junior Carter Haberkorn placed 12th (18:41.1) to round out the Comets’ score (25) ahead of Postville (66), Central (83), South Winneshiek (102), Kee (107) and Clayton Ridge (139).

In the Varsity Girls 5K, Charles City seniors Lauren Staudt and Maggie Boss shattered their personal-record times with Staudt placing seventh (22:22.4 — 1:11 improvement) and Boss placing 11th (23:02.6 — 2:30 improvement).

With freshman Megan Bobcock (21st, 25:35.9), senior Mackenzie Zweibohmer (22nd, 25:39.3) and freshman Mazie Bruening (30th, 27:11.4) rounding out the score, the Comets placed third (80) behind South Winneshiek (28) and MFL MarMac (50); and ahead of Elkader Central (86), Clayton Ridge (136) and Postville (156).
