CHARLES CITY — No need to check the archives … the record books … or into the deepest wells of the internet.
Charles City sophomore Keely Anderegg set an all-time school record for most successive service points to start a varsity volleyball match against Waverly-Shell Rock.
During Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference match at Comet Gym, Anderegg served up 20 straight for, needless to note, a 20-0 lead. Three emergency timeouts from the Go-Hawks couldn’t slow down the onslaught as the Comets cruised to a 25-2 first-set victory in less than 10 minutes.
Things didn’t get much better for Waverly-Shell Rock in what proved to be a long but rather short night for the team. Charles City took the second set (25-14), and after the Go-Hawks pulled within a point (18-17) of catching the Comets in the third, the home team prevailed (25-20) for the 3-0 match sweep.
Record-setting server Anderegg — Editor’s Note: if someone alerts our office of some former Comet who started at match against WSR with 20-straight service points and provide source verification, we’ll run a correction — was good on all 26 of her service attempts with three aces for the Class 4A Top 15-ranked Comets, who improved to 17-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEIC; WSR fell to 6-13 and 2-1.
Comet senior Emma Miller recorded a double-double that poses a considerable degree of difficulty in volleyball (11 kills and 10 digs), to go with three blocks and three service aces.
Senior Keely Collins had eight kills and five blocks; junior Jadyn Van Horn had seven kills and four blocks; junior Mya Rimrod had 11 digs; and sophomore Sofia Parrott was credited with 27 assists for Charles City, which — barring further notification — won’t be back in action until Oct. 2 to host NEIC foe Crestwood.
