Comet boys 3rd at Algona Cross Country Invitational

Charles City senior Lukas Vance, shown at right heading into the homestretch during last week’s XC meet at Grundy Center, continues to be a top-5 team-point placer for the Comets as he was Monday at the Algona Invite while helping the CC boys take 3rd.

ALGONA — For the second straight meet and within a span of just four days, Charles City junior Nick Williams posted a sub-17-minute 5K time while placing third as an individual in the Varsity Boys race at Monday’s Algona Cross Country Invitational held at River Road Golf Course.
Williams’s time of 16 minutes, 50.28 seconds — which was about 3 seconds slower than what he ran at the Sam Iverson Invitational at Grundy Center the previous Thursday, and about 5 seconds shy of his personal-record set late into his sophomore season last year — was bested only by Okoboji junior Evan Osler (16:19.79) and Spirit Lake junior Brandon Hughes (16:23.58) amid a field of 107 start-to-finish runners.
With fellow Comet junior and two-time state-qualifier Xander Graeser placing ninth (17:30.62) followed by seniors Isaac Thompson (14th, 17:40.61) and Lukas Vance (42nd, 18:43.86), and sophomore Jackson Kowalski (43rd, 18:45.61) rounding out the initial top-five scoring with 109 team points, Charles City placed third among the 15 full teams behind only Forest City (77) and Okoboji (84).
In the Varsity Girls race, Charles City placed 10th among the 13 full teams.
Seniors Lauren Staudt and Maggie Boss were the first Comet runners across the finish line with both setting new PRs — Staudt’s 27th-place time of 22:10.46 is 1:23 faster than her best time from last season; Boss’ 50th-place time of 23:22 is 2:15 faster than her best time from last season.
Mallard sophomore Tyra Schupback paced the Varsity Girls with a first-place time of 19:25.25.
Mason City sophomore Brogan Evans was runner-up (19:41.57) while seizing the one (1) scoring spot — Schupback’s Mallard team not at full-team strength — and helping the Riverhawks win the girls race with 32 team points, well ahead of runner-up Forest City (70).
