Comets achieve PRs at Washburn Statewide Middle School XC Meet

Press Staff Report

ANKENY — Fresh off achieving All-Northeast Iowa Conference status during the “official” end of the junior high cross country season, Charles City eighth-grader Justice Armstrong placed 30th at the Dick Washburn Statewide Middle School XC Classic held Oct. 14 at Ankeny Centennial High School.

Armstrong’s 2-mile time of 12 minutes, 14.8 seconds was a personal-record.

The middle school XC season generally ends with conference meets. The 27th-annual Washburn Classic often serves as the “de facto” final meet of the season for junior high programs across the state though it’s not a sanctioned school event.

Charles City often fields a contingent of junior high runners for the race. This year’s squad of Comets for the most part recorded personal-records at the Classic.

Included were three of the Comet female participants — Karina Ibarra (15:52.4 PR), Jersey Dizon (16:06.1 PR) and Ellie Mason (17:44.0 PR).

Other Comet male runners participating included Benjamin Tracey (13:47.7 PR), Thomas Boss (14:07.4), Samuel Northrop (14:26.1 PR), Carter Mack (14:50.6 PR), Noah Kostka (15:08.0 PR), Dawson Griffin (15:56.1 PR), Garrett Scott (16:48.1), Ian Gohr (17:26.6 PR) and Ivan Vallebo (19:00.1 PR).
