CHARLES CITY — You might know Joey Robel as The Official Unpaid Spokesman for his family’s business … Quality Auto Services.
But if he’s not careful, he may unwittingly become the unpaid promoter of the spanking-new synthetic lanes at Comet Bowl.
During Charles City’s high school season-opener, the Comet freshman took a perfect game bid into the 10th frame of the second individual round game.
“He came up high on the head pin and left the 3-6,” Charles City head coach Doug Bohlen said of his right-hander, who finished with a meet-high 276 game to cap a meet-high 443 series while helping the Comets sweep the Denver Cyclones in both programs’ season-opener Tuesday at Comet Bowl.
With junior returning state-qualifier Keaton Ross rolling a 427 two-game series which included a 224 first game, junior Shayne Groesbeck improving from a 191 to a 192 (383) from the first game to the second game, junior Cole Jones shooting a 362 and sophomore Sullivan Gerleman rolling a 349 followed by a five-game Baker Rotation team output of 925 in spite of a 127 third game, Charles City boys’ total pinfall of 2,889 was 313 greater than Denver’s.
In the girls dual, Charles City only fielded five varsity bowlers against Denver, yet it’s nice when two of them are returning state medal winners.
Senior Claire Girkin, who placed fourth among Class 1A individual girls at state last winter, led all varsity girls with a 419 two-game series including a 222 in the first game.
Junior Isabel Crawford, who tied for fifth among the Class 1A state finalists, rolled a 362 series followed by junior Payton Hadley (333), and freshmen Kinleigh Bahe (304) and Miyah Stevenson (207) that — with the subsequent Baker Rotation round — added to a total pinfall of 2,440 … 366 better than the Cyclones.
