Comets place 5th at Central Warriors Girls Wrestling Tournament

Press Staff Report

ELKADER — The Charles City Comets advanced three wrestlers to championship bouts with one attaining a title while placing fifth as a team among a field of 18 schools at the Central Warriors Girls Tournament, Tuesday at Central Elkader High School.

Charles City senior Ava Thompson, a returning state-qualifier from the inaugural IGHSAU Girls State Wrestling Championships, pinned Decorah sophomore Madysen Lippe 2:45 into their 235-pound championship bout.

Comet junior Leah Stewart, another returning state-qualifier, advanced to the 190-pound final where she was stopped by Decorah junior Kamyn Steines 2:33 into their bout.

Charles City junior Destiny Kolheim dominated her first two opponents before getting paired with Decorah sophomore Lauren Luzum in the 155-pound final where an unsportsmanlike disqualification imposed on Kolheim granted Luzum the title.

That was unfortunate on multiple fronts for Kolheim and the Comets as the DQ spoiled Kolheim’s undefeated season at that point as well as stripping 22 team points Kolheim had compiled in the tournament.

But that didn’t affect Charles City’s team placement as Sumner-Fredericksburg’s fourth-place total (126) was more than 22 team points greater than the Comets’ total (99).

West Delaware bested Decorah by 5 team points (168 to 163) to win the meet; Independence was third (140).

Charles City freshman Sophia Calpito earned a total of 18 team points for the Comets after she pinned Independence’s Alaina Terhune during “short time” of the third period of their 105-pound third-place match.

With a sixth-place showing in the 115-pound bracket, freshman Emma Schmitt earned 11 points for the Comets.

Other Charles City wrestlers earning team points included freshmen Edie Collins (125) and Sydnee Bliss (170), who both scored 7 points; and freshman Alexuz Ohlendorf (110), sophomore Tegan Cavanaugh (120) and junior Kylie Blunt (135), who scored 4 points.
