CHARLES CITY — The late, great Earl Weaver used to claimthat the best play in baseball is the 3-run homer.

That being said, the best play in basketball must be the 4-point play.

Waverly-Shell Rock senior Noah Frazell knows the drill.

During Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference boys basketball game against the hosting Charles City Comets, Frazell “drilled” a pair of 3-point shots while drawing fouls before converting both “and-one” free throws.

If my math is correct, that’s an efficient way to compile 8 points — and Frazell added more to that as he led all scorers with 23 points while helping the visiting Go-Hawks to a convincing 73-56 road victory.

Frazell’s second 4-point play gave the Go-Hawks their first double-digit lead (56-44) with about seven minutes left in regulation.

From there, the Go-Hawks started stroking it from the outside while outscoring the Comets 24-14 in the fourth quarter, never giving the hosts a chance to get back into the game.

In addition to Frazell going 6 of 8 from beyond the 3-point arc including the aforementioned “bonus” treys, Go-Hawk senior guard Benny Ramker was also on target from downtown going 4 of 7 for most of his 17 points.

Junior Luke Frazell scored 14 and senior Cole Marsh scored 11 for the Go-Hawks (2-2, 1-0 NEIC).

Charles City (0-6, 0-2) was led by senior Keenan Wiley, who scored 21 points and led all rebounders with nine. Including a 3-point field goal out of four attempts, Wiley scored in a variety of ways while often utilizing his unheralded crossover dribble.

Senior Kayden Kasemeier had 11 points for the Comets.

* There was no state-shattering shocker in the previous girls game of Tuesday’s varsity doubleheader in Comet Gym.

The Class 4A No. 4-ranked Go-Hawks improved their undefeated record to 6-0 while claiming their first NEIC win of the season with a 70-24 victory.

For WSR, it was the usual suspects operating for the most part within the usual crime scene — in the paint and under the basket.

Check that — the Go-Hawks are usually never under the basket when they battle for rebounds on both ends of the floor against the Comets. Rather with their superior size and physical style of play, they trap Comets directly under the basket to where the only access to the ball is limited to when it goes through the rim.

Katelyn Eggena had 14 points to lead the Go-Hawks.

Perhaps because of inadvertently sprinkling ground Carolina Reaper on her homemade pizza the night before, Comet senior Maggie Boss maintained the “hot” scoring hand for the Comets as she matched Eggena for game-high honors with 14 points, including 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point land.

Two of senior Hannah Hoffman’s three rebounds were off the offensive glass for the Comets (1-6, 0-2).

Both Comet boys and girls varsity teams will be back in action on Friday (Dec. 15) when they host NEIC rival Crestwood.
