MASON CITY — The final 2 points of Keenan Wiley’s game-high 25 points that put a punctuation mark on the Charles City Comets’ 66-53 non-conference boys basketball road win over Mason City on a frigid Monday night even brought the Riverhawks’ student section to its feet.
The section even brought a poster-size mug of Wiley, a former Mason City student, to wave for such a celebration — it was an open-court slam-dunk.
Actually, Wiley could have scored more if it were not for a series of missed layups getting spit out of cylinder after drawing too much iron.
The Comets led for the entire game and often by double-digits. When Riverhawk sophomore Marcele Whitner completed a 3-point play midway through the third period, it pulled Mason City within a possession (42-40).
But even though Charles City did have a cold night shooting at point-blank range as Wiley wasn’t the only Comet having trouble getting his shots to fall down low, its aggressiveness plagued the Riverhawks with foul trouble.
Kayden Kasemeier scored 13 points and Jack Hanson added 10 for the Comets (4-5), who have now won four straight after starting the season at 0-5.
Whitner had 18 points for the Riverhawks (1-10).
Charles City will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts West Hancock in a varsity basketball doubleheader.
