CHARLES CITY — No doubt, the equipment and conditions have amped up the scoring in bowling a bit since the days of Don Carter. Still, maintaining a 200 average remains the sports’ standard of excellence.

Such is how the Charles City boys bowling team has been bowling this new year. On Friday while hosting Tripoli at Comet Bowl, the Comets compiled a year-high (and season-high) 3,096 total pinfall score while rolling over the Panthers by more than 1,200 pins.

Earlier that week on Tuesday while hosting Independence in a makeup contest, the Comet boys compiled a 3,049 score for their first time over 3,000 this year (and season).

“When you score 3,000, you’re averaging 200 a game,” said Comet head coach Doug Bohlen in reference to their being 10 scored individual games followed by five Baker Rotation games. “So our guys have been rolling pretty well.”

Comet junior Keaton Ross, a returning state-qualifier, rolled a meet-high 473 two-game series and included a 247 in the first game.

Comet sophomore Sullivan Gerleman was actually the “high man” in the first game with a 248 which he followed with a 220 for a 468 series.

Freshman Noah White had a 387 two-game series, followed by junior Cole Jones (373) and junior Zach Putney (360) to round out the individual scoring for the Comets (5-2).

The Comet girls team got back into the win column with a one-sided 2,484-1,638 victory over the Panthers.

Comet junior and returning state-qualifier Isabel Crawford led all girls with a 382 two-game series which included a girls meet high-game score of 223 in the latter game. Crawford also helped bail out her teammates during the fourth game of the Baker Rotation when she struck out in the 10th frame to salvage a 149.

Comet senior and returning state-qualifier Claire Girkin rolled a 339 two-game series. Junior Payton Hadley (321), junior Darian Hesse (319) and freshman Miyah Stevensen (319) rounded out the individual scoring for the Comet girls (4-3).

Both Charles City squads will be participating in a conference tournament on Wednesday starting at 10 a.m. at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
