CHARLES CITY — For the second season in a row, the Charles City Comets girls basketball team rid itself of a sustained losing streak while defeating North Butler … this time by a score of 41-40, Thursday at Comet Gym.
Last season when the Comets defeated the Bearcats on the road, it ended a winless drought that spanned multiple seasons.
The most-recent Comet win stopped a 14-game skid after Charles City won its season-opener against Waterloo East in another close game (54-52).
Charles City (2-14) jumped out to a 10-0 lead before the Bearcats (4-13) rallied to go up 19-14 midway through the second quarter.
When Comet senior Maggie Boss hit her third 3-point field goal of the game, it put Charles City back in front (27-25) with about five minutes left in the third quarter.
When Comet sophomore Evelyn Mayhew hit her second 3-pointer of the game, it attained another double-digit advantage (37-26) for Charles City late in the third quarter.
Boss led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Seniors Lauren Staudt and Alex Wohlers each scored 7, Mayhew had 6 and senior Hannah Hoffman scored 5 for the Comets.
Senior Kaycee Wiebke had a game-high 17 points for the Bearcats, who only hit one 3-pointer all game which was too little, too late as Jady Thorne’s trey at the game-ending buzzer capped the score after the Comets — nursing a 4-point lead with less than 10 seconds left — were implored not to foul a jump shooter.
Charles City will be back in action Friday as part of a varsity doubleheader against Crestwood in Cresco.
