Comet netters sweep Bulldogs in first full varsity meet

HAMPTON — In its first full varsity meet of the season, the Charles City girls tennis team swept all nine varsity matches (9-0) on the road against Hampton-Dumont.

In her first match at No. 1 singles during her high school career, Comet senior Rylee DeBoest defeated H-D’s Ashley Chipahua 8-2 in a pro-set match.

Comet freshman Sophia Alinea defeated Bulldog Jada Johnson 8-3 at No. 2 for her first high school win; senior Hannah Hoffman shutout (8-0) Chloe Creighton at No. 3 singles; Jada Litterer defeated Eunice Vasquez 8-1 at No. 4 singles; Marissa Avelar bested Lauren Hill 8-4 at No. 5 singles; and Alexis Eaves completed the singles sweep with a 8-5 win over Mary Jane Jensen at No. 6.

Longtime Charles City doubles pair DeBoest and Hoffman defeated Chipahau and Johnson 8-0 at No. 1 doubles; Alinea and Litterer defeated Creighton and Vasquez 8-1 at No. 2 doubles; and Avelar and Eves needed an extended set (9-7) to finally take down Hill and Jensen at No. 3 singles.

Charles City also swept all seven junior varsity matches with Kory Osier, Kylie Parsons, Aubrey Michael and Gabriella Deverell all winning their singles and doubles matches.

The Comets will be back in action next Thursday (April 4) when they host Dike-New Hartford at Sportsmen’s Park.
