Comet netters edge Riverhawks 5-4 for 2nd meet win of season

MASON CITY — With the meet tied at four wins apiece, Charles City’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Jada Litterer and freshman Sofia Alinea defeated Mason City’s Annora Lewerke and Kaitlyn Thangaraj 6-4, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) to give the Comets their second win of the season.

“They were our MVPs,” Comet head coach Brian Parrott said of Litterer and Alinea. “They also won their singles matches.”

At No. 2, Alinea bounced back from a 6-1 first-set setback against Olivia Wickman to win the next two (6-0, 6-2); at No. 4, Litterer defeated Estella Huesman 6-3, 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker).

“Honorable mention goes to Anya Ruzicka,” Parrott said of his senior, who won her first varsity match when bested Lily Clausen at No. 6 singles.

Charles City seniors Rylee DeBoest and Hannah Hoffman defeated Wickman and Tamar Lewerke 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles for the Comets’ other win.

The Comets (2-1) return to Sportsmen’s Park to host Decorah on Tuesday.
