CHARLES CITY — Often, it’s a matter of the ball finding the hole that determines ESPN Top 10 Plays of Day worthiness.

Alex Wohler’s 150-yard iron shot on Cedar Ridge’s 10th hole at the beginning of Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference girls golf dual meet between Waverly-Shell Rock and hosting Charles City almost made the qualifying cut.

Going into a brisk wind, the Comet senior placed the shot within an inch of the hole before the backspin made it sit a couple feet from the flag.

Eagle be damned, Wohlers birdied the par-3 hole to take an early lead over the field. Though she bogeyed the remaining eight holes, Wohlers finished with a personal-record nine-hole low of 49, which paced Comet golfers.

The Go-Hawks carried the day, thanks in part to senior Brenna Bodensteiner — Iowa’s resident Heisman Scholarship Award recipient — and junior Mady Mummelthei, who respectively shot medalist and runner-up scores of 43 and 45.

With Wohlers placing third among individuals, Charles City seized the next three scoring slots with seniors Shelby Effle (54) and Claire Girkin (56), junior Isabell Crawford (58) capping a 217 team total — Go-Hawks shot 208 as a team.

* Meanwhile at Waverly Golf and Country Club, the Go-Hawk boys hosted the Comets in a NEIC dual of their own.

Paced by Luke Franzell’s medalist score of 37 and Aiden Gielau’s runner-up score of 39, WSR shot an impressive 156 as a team with Tyler Gade, Hudson Royman and Wes Hubbard each shooting 40s.

Comet junior Carson Gallup paced his team with a 42, followed by senior Kaden Buseman’s PR nine-hole low (44) with junior Riley Perez (46) and sophomore Bryce Walker (49) rounding out Charles City’s total of 181.

Both Comet boys and girls teams will be back in action next Tuesday (April 16). Charles City’s boys will play in an invitational at Waverly Golf and Country Club starting at 1 p.m.; CC’s girls will travel to Oneota Golf and Country Club for a road dual meet against Decorah starting at 4 p.m.
