Press Staff Report

CHARLES CITY — Sophomore forward Jackson Kowalski scored two goals, senior midfielder Clayton Wright was credited with a pair of assists, and sophomore keeper Sullivan Gerleman stopped four out of five shots on goal while helping the Charles City Comets boys soccer team attain its first victory of the season with a 3-1 home win over New Hampton on Tuesday.

Junior Carter Haberkorn also found the net for the Comets (1-7) for his team-leading fifth of the season.

Charles City previously lost a high-scoring match (8-7) against the Chickasaws during both teams’ season-opener on March 28.

* The Comets were in good position to win two in a row when they hosted Waterloo East the following Thursday.

The Trojans were winless at 0-9 going into the match with four of those losses being 10-0 match-stopping shutouts.

But against the Comets, WE managed to take a 2-1 with a strong wind at its back in the first half, and then added another goal in the second half in a 3-1 final that finally got the Trojans in the win column.

Senior defender Alex Haus scored the Comets lone goal against the Trojans.

The next scheduled home match for the Comets is May 6 against Mason City.
