Comet netters defeat Clear Lake Lions 5-4

CLEAR LAKE — After taking four out the six singles matches, the Charles City Comets girls tennis team clinched Monday’s away meet against Clear Lake when its No. 1 doubles team of seniors Rylee DeBoest and Hannah Hoffman defeated Macey Brant and Makayla Martin 8-3 in a pro-set match.

The Lions won the subsequent doubles matches by extended scores when Paitlyn Enke and Ashley Martin defeated Jada Litterer and Anya Ruzicka 9-8 (7-5 tiebreaker) at No. 2; and Lauryn Coleman and Gracey Smith defeated Alexis Eaves and Marissa Avelar 9-7 at No. 3, but the meet had already been decided.

Earlier, DeBoest defeated Brant 8-5 at No. 1 singles; Hoffman defeated Martin 8-2 at No. 2 singles; Litterer defeated Enke 8-3 at No. 3 singles; and Avelar defeated Smith 8-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Comets improved to 5-4 for the season.

Next up for Charles City is a rescheduled away meet against Osage on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s rescheduled North Central Tennis Conference Tournament at Luther College.
