Press Staff Report

Only two strokes separated three teams during Tuesday’s boys golf triangular that featured Charles City, MFL-MarMac and New Hampton at New Hampton Golf and Country Club.

The same could be said for the top three individuals

Charles City senior Carson Gallup shot a season-low nine-hole score of 35 for medalist honors, edging runner-up Ben Krambeer (36) of MFL-MarMac and Jack Shawver (37) of New Hampton.

Gallup nearly matched his high school personal-best nine-hole score of 34 he achieved during his freshman season.

The Comets themselves shot a season nine-hole low (170) with sophomore Bryce Walker (44), senior Gabe Rogstad (45) and junior Riley Perez (46) rounding out the team score.

But the hosting Chickasaws won the meet with a team score of 169; the Bulldogs finished 1 shot behind.

The day before during a dual meet against Crestwood at Cresco Country Club, Gallup carded an 11 on the course’s Par-5 first hole for a “sextuple bogey”. You couldn’t blame him for depositing his golf clubs into the nearest water hazard after that ordeal.

Instead, Gallup went on to par four of the next five holes before finishing the nine-hole course with a pair of birdies for a 42 for medalist honors.

Perez also shot a 42 which earned him runner-up status due to a tiebreaker.

With Kaden Buseman (49) and Jeb Wandro (55) rounding out Charles City’s team score of 188, the Comets finished 7 strokes behind the hosting Cadets (181), who were led by Luke Drtina’s 43.
