DECORAH — Hannah Hoffman emerged as the No. 3 singles champion, and fellow Charles City senior and doubles partner Rylee DeBoest received the Sportsmanship Award as determined by player vote during Wednesday’s North Central Tennis Conference Tournament at Luther College.

The Comets as a team placed third out of five teams with 27 team points — 1 point ahead of Waverly-Shell Rock and 1 point behind runner-up Osage.

Decorah, which boasted seven champions out of the nine brackets, won the tournament with 43 points.

Oelwein placed fifth with 11 points.

Charles City junior Alexis Eaves finished second in No. 6 singles behind Decorah’s Leah Holland.

Eaves later teamed up with junior Anya Ruzicka to place second in No. 3 doubles behind Decorah’s tandem of Jaidyn Duvel and Holland.

In No. 2 doubles, Charles City senior Jada Litterer and freshman Sofia Alinea placed second behind Decorah’s Kaitlyn Bjork and Klaasa Short.

Other conference champions include Decorah’s Evon Leitz at No. 1 singles, Olivia Huinker at No. 2 singles, Bjork at No. 3 singles and Duvel at No. 6 singles; and the Osage sister duo of Kaitlyn and Kendall Olson at No. 1 doubles.

Four Comets received Academic All-Conference honors — DeBoest, Hoffman, Litterer and Ruzicka. The awards are presented to junior and senior letter-winners who have maintained at least a 3.5 grade-point-average.

The conference tournament was originally scheduled for last Saturday, but inclement weather moved it to Wednesday.

The Comets are due to return to Luther College on Monday for the first round of the Singles and Doubles Regional.
