Comet doubles team wins first 2 matches at tennis regionals

DECORAH — The Charles City doubles team of Jada Litterer and Anya Ruzicka advanced as far as the second round after winning their first two matches during the Class 1A Singles and Doubles Tennis Regional, Monday at Luther College.

The Comet pair defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Mary Jane Nenson and Yesenia Valenzuela 6-0, 6-1 in the “Pigtail Round” before advancing past Aplington-Parkersburg’s Jayden Krausman and Bella Sessler 6-3, 7-5 (10-4 tiebreaker) in the first round.

Facing Waverly-Shell Rock’s Emily Bittinger and Haddie Huisenga in the second round, Litterer and Ruzicka were stopped in straight-set scores of 6-3, 6-0.

Charles City freshman Sofia Alinea won her first match in the singles bracket when she defeated Waverly-Shell Rock’s Natalie Beck 6-4, 7-6 (10-7 tiebreaker) in the first round before being eliminated by Oelwein’s Fanny Halleux 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.

Charles City doubles team of seniors Rylee DeBoest and Hannah Hoffman drew No. 1 seed Kaitlyn and Kendall Olson from Osage and were eliminated in straight-set scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Charles City returns to the Class 1A Regionals on Friday for the team competition.
