Charles City junior Carson Gallup was playing his best golf at the end of the season, but it didn’t stop him from being eliminated early in the postseason during Wednesday’s highly competitive sectional at Wildcat Golf and Country Club in Shellsburg.

SHELLSBURG — Shoot an 18-hole score of 75 at a sectional and you can pack your golf bags for districts.

Not so fast.

Charles City junior Carson Gallup, who at an invitational at Hampton the Saturday before carded a career-low varsity score of 73, continued to play well at Wednesday’s Class 3A Boys Golf Sectional at Wildcat Golf Course for the aforementioned score of 75.

But, alas, Gallup was two strokes short from advancing in next Monday’s district round at Waverly Golf and Country Club.

Gallup’s Comet teammates also shot well with their best 18-hole team score (327) of the season which included marked scores by sophomore Bryce Walker (83), junior Riley Perez (84) and senior Gabe Rogstad (85).

“Bryce and Gabe shot their best scores of the season,” said Charles City head coach Dave Williams, who team finished seventh behind Waverly-Shell Rock (299), Gilbert (311), Independence (311), Vinton-Shellsburg (314), South Tama (315) and Clear Creek-Amana (325); and ahead of Benton (337).

“It was a tough sectional,” Williams said.

Vinton-Shellsburg’s Carter Lamont and Waverly-Shell Rock’s Luke Frazell each shot 70 to pace the field with Lamont earning medalist honors due to tiebreaker.

Dawson Fuelling of Independence advanced with a 73; Kaden Kopsa of South Tama just missed with a 74.

Ryan Lynch of Gilbert and Noah Frazell of Waverly-Shell Rock each shot 75 to match Gallup.

“I want to thank the boys for an enjoyable season,” Williams said after the Comets’ campaign came to an end.
