MANCHESTER — Three Charles City Comets achieved career-low 18-hole scores during what proved to be their last meet of the season at the Class 3A Girls Golf Regional at Pin Oak Pub and Links on Wednesday.

Comet senior and three-time All-Northeast Iowa Conference golfer Shelby Effle shot a 94 — 3 strokes lower than her previous best varsity 18-hole score — while placing 14th among individuals.

Charles City junior Mya Rimrod capped her first season of varsity golf while entering double-digit territory for the first time with a 99 which placed her in the Top 20.

Junior Payton Hadley’s career-low 101 and junior Isabell Crawford’s 112 rounded out Charles City’s team score of 406 which placed them sixth in a field of 12 full teams.

Placing ahead of the Comets were regional champions Wahlert Catholic (341), which was paced by senior medalist Ava Kalb (78) and by freshman runner-up Elin Mueller (79); West Delaware (359), led by senior individual state-qualifier Emma Hogan (83); Dike-New Hartford (362); Center Point-Urbana (391), led by senior individual state-qualifier Addison Weber (86); and Benton (405), led by freshman individual state-qualifier Halle Sobaski (81).

Wahlert Catholic and West Delaware as well as the aforementioned individual qualifiers including Decorah junior Maria Riveros (81) advance to the Class 3A Girls State Golf Tournament, May 23-24 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

* At the Class 1A Girls Golf Regional Final at Nashua Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, both Nashua-Plainfield and North Butler advanced to state as teams after respectively placing second (388) and third (394) behind Beckman Catholic (386).

The Bearcats got the nod due to the Huskies finishing in the top two — when a team advances to the state tournament with the regional played at their home course, the third-place team also makes the cut.

The Huskies were led by junior Paige Franzen’s medalist and career-low score of 76.

Even without the third-place advancement, the Bearcats would have had two golfers advance with senior runner-up Reagan Mulder (85) and senior Ella Lindell (93), who placed in the top six.

Beckman Catholic was led by senior Maddie Schmitz’s fourth-place individual score of 86.

The Class 1A Girls State Golf Tournament will be held May 23-24 at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
