Huskies rout Comets 23-4

CHARLES CITY — A player’s commitment to the game is often tested when his team is mired in a rout that — even with a mercy rule in place — shows no indication of ending soon.

The Charles City Comets had “one of those games” when they hosted former conference foe Oelwein last Friday.

The Huskies rallied for 9 runs in the first innings, 7 more in the third, and another 7 in the sixth on way to winning big 23-4.

It could have been worse if it wasn’t for Comet sophomore first baseman Luke Jacobs.

Jacobs did his team, his fellow infielders, emergency reliever Alex Fernandez who bravely took the mound to save unnecessary pitch counts from the regular Comet pitching staff, and the fans dutifully sticking around to the end a favor when he — on consecutive plays — leaped up in the air to snare a high throw and then pick clean and inbetween hop out of the dirt for the second and third outs of the half inning.

Jacobs also went 1 for 2 at the plate and drove in a run.

Holden McInroy went 2 for 2 with a double and had 3 RBIs; and Kaden Buseman was 2 for 2 and scored twice for the Comets (2-9).

Brady Burkhart and Landon Whitaker each had three hits for the Huskies (4-9).
