NEW HAMPTON — Doubleheaders don’t test your memory as well as your ability to forget what’s happened in the recent past to move forward with a clean slate and a clear head.

After Charles City lost the first game of Friday’s Northeast Iowa Conference baseball doubleheader to Class 2A No. 6-ranked New Hampton by a score of 12-0 while being held hitless in five innings by Chickasaw starter Breden McShane and reliever Caden Rochford, fortunes seemed to turn for the Comets at the start of the second game when leadoff hitter Kaden Buseman singled and later scored to give Charles City a 1-0 lead.

But that proved to be the only hit and only run the Comets would score all night as the Chickasaws completed the sweep with a 5-1 nightcap win.

New Hampton rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the second after Talyn Bohaty doubled deep to right-center field with one out to set the tone.

McShane, who in relief would pick up his second win of the night, homered even deeper to right-center field to extend the lead to 4-1.

New Hampton scored an unearned run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Senior Kael Meyers, who set a New Hampton team record last season with a .617 on-base percentage, had three hits and 5 RBIs on the night while helping the Chickasaws improve to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in the NEIC where NH sits atop.

Charles City fell to 2-13 and 2-10, and will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Waverly-Shell Rock in a NEIC doubleheader.

One of the bright spots for the Comets this season has been freshman pitcher Noah White.

Coming off his debut varsity bowling season which he capped with a runner-up individual performance at the state meet, White struck out eight while yielding one hit and an unearned run in a four-inning, long-relief stint in the second game to help keep his team within rally range.
