With sweep of Indians, Comets close in on NEIC softball title

Charles City freshman Edie Collins steals a base as Decorah shortstop Jasera Tweten attempts to corral the throw during Monday’s NEIC game, which the Comets won 7-0. The Comets will host the Vikings again next Thursday (July 11) in the Class 4A-Region 5 quarterfinals.

WAUKON — Charles City rallied for 5 runs in the top of the 12th inning to finally defeat a stubborn Waukon Indians team 15-10 in the first game of Wednesday’s rescheduled Northeast Iowa Conference softball doubleheader, then completed the sweep with a 19-4 victory called after six innings in the second game.
The wins improved the Comets’ records to 23-4 overall and 12-1 in the NEIC where Charles City sits atop with (as of July 4) a few more wins in the victory column than Waverly-Shell Rock, which also has one league loss — the Comets and Go-Hawks split in a doubleheader at Charles City on June 18 for each of the teams’ NEIC setbacks.
The Comets are scheduled to play the Go-Hawks Monday at Waverly to complete the regular-season series. Charles City is also scheduled to host Crestwood on Tuesday in a rescheduled game to close out the regular season with a NEIC title likely on the line.
On Thursday, Charles City will host Decorah in the Class 4A-Region 5 quarterfinal. Waverly-Shell Rock is also in the bracket, as well as Class 4A No. 8-ranked Western Dubuque and No. 12-ranked Clear Creek-Amana.
