SHEFFIELD — A pair of North Butler Bearcats led the way in both the Girls and Boys Varsity 5K races during Monday’s West Fork Cross Country Invitational.

NB sophomore Addison Voelker, who placed 18th in the Class 1A girls race last fall at the State XC Championships to cap her freshman season, finished way out in front of the 16-runner field with a first place time of 20 minutes, 46.39 seconds — nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Lila Swenson, a junior from Belmond-Klemme.

In the subsequent boys race, Bearcat sophomore Ezra Almelien was the first to the finish with a time of 18:18.41.

Though the Bearcats had another runner finish in the top six in the girls race — sophomore Cora Barnett (25:58.16) — she was the only other participant representing NB’s incomplete team as Belmond-Klemme (27 team points) and West Fork (29) placed first and second respectively in team standings.

The Bearcats were more represented in the boys race with Almelien’s teammates — Trager Pecha (18:21.65), Alex Almelien (18:48.91) and Brady Henning (18:52.10) — seizing the next three (2nd, 3rd and 4th) places. William Nielson was the next Bearcat in with a 12th-place time of 20:27.97 as North Butler’s team total (22) was well ahead of runner-up West Fork (39) and Belmond-Klemme (65).
