ALGONA — Competing in their second invitational in four days, the Charles City boys cross country team placed fifth amid a 14-team field at Monday’s Algona Invitational at River Road Golf Club.

After helping the Comets place runner-up at last Thursday’s Sam Iverson Invite hosted by Grundy Center, neither of Charles City’s resident three-time state-qualifiers had one of their faster 5K performances at River Road.

Senior Nick Williams placed fourth with a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds behind Spirit Lake seniors Brandon Hughes and Dietrich Dirks, who finished first and second with respective times of 16:52 and 17:08; and St. Edmond junior Anthony Valles, who placed third (17:17).

Comet senior Xander Graeser, the other three-time state-qualifier, placed 13th with a time of 18:03.

Though Williams and Graeser may have had off day, it wasn’t the same for Charles City junior Jackson Kowalski, who set a personal-record with his 13th-place time of 18:13.

Charles City seniors Carter Haberkorn (50th, 19:34) and Jordin Ritter (61st, 20:07) rounded out the Comets’ team scoring at 149.

Forest City won the meet with 69 team points.

Charles City’s girls competed in the Girls Junior Varsity 5K and placed runner-up to Mason City amid the four-team field.

Sophomore Megan Babcock placed fourth with a time of 26:14.

Rounding out the Comet score were freshman Kinley Roths (10th, 27:08), sophomore Athena Dittmer (11th, 27:18), junior Fiona Pittman (30th, 29:41) and sophomore Paige Pickar (33rd, 30:08).
