The Charles City Comets streamlined into the semifinal round of the forthcoming Class 4A-Region 1 volleyball bracket while drawing a bye.

The Comets (16-5) will host the winner of the Waterloo East (3-21) at Decorah (15-9) quarterfinal match on Oct. 24 starting at 7 p.m. in Comet Gym.

Charles City had defeated Waterloo East during a tournament in Waterloo, and recently vanquished the Vikings to clinch the final Northeast Iowa Conference regular-season title.

Decorah had defeated Charles City in a non-league-sanctioned triangular earlier in the season.

The other side of the bracket includes top-seed Xavier (23-4), which also advances to the semis by way of abye, Independence (16-15) and Waverly-Shell Rock (14-17).

The regional final will be played on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the site of the highest-seed finalist.

* In the Class 1A-Region 3 bracket, Rockford (12-11) will host Bishop Garrigan (5-21) in the first round on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The winner will face the GTRA (1-14) at West Bend-Mallard (13-13) winner on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

In the same 1A-3 bracket, Nashua-Plainfield (9-9) hosts Northwood-Kensett (0-18) in the first round on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The winner will face the Kee (0-20) at Turkey Valley (11-13) winner on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Semifinals will be played on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.; the final will be played on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at sites to be determined.

* In the Class 2A-Region 1 bracket, AGWSR (9-21) will host North Butler (6-18) in the first round on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The winner will face top-seed Denver (38-3) on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

Semifinals will be played on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.; the final will be played on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at sites to be determined.
