BATTLE BETWEEN NO. 2 & NO.3: Charles City sophomore Sophia Calpito, left, tries to prevent Decorah senior Chloe Sheffield from getting to her feet during the 100-pound bout from last week’s girls dual hosted by the Decorah Vikings. At the time, Sheffield and Calpito were ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in their Class 1A weight class according to IAwrestle. Calpito was able to avenge an earlier loss to Sheffield this season with a 9-7 decision win in the rematch. Calpito later went 4-0 with four first-period fall victories during Thursday’s “Battle of Waterloo” at Young Arena.

WATERLOO — All three of Charles City’s returning state-qualifiers emerged undefeated from Thursday’s Dan Gable Museum “Battle of Waterloo” girls wrestling tournament held throughout the day at Young Arena.

And if you had blinked, you might have missed some of their wins as more than a handful ended in falls less than a minute into the bouts.

Charles City sophomore Sophia Calpito, who got one of her best wins of her career when she defeated Decorah’s returning state runner-up Chloe Sheffield during a dual meet last week while avenging an loss to Sheffield earlier in the season, was undefeated in all four of the 100-pound matches she wrestled — all of them first-period fall victories — improving her season record to 16-4.

Comet senior 155-pounder Destiny Kolheim also had four first-period fall victories in her bracket at the “Battle” while going 5-0 for the day — Vinton-Shellsburg’s Dakota Cornell managed to take Kolheim to the second period but was stopped at the 2:20 mark.

Kolheim improved her record this season to 12-3.

Comet senior Leah Stewart, a state-medalist at 190 last season, recorded three fall victories while wrestling at 190 as well as an 8-5 decision win over Crestwood’s Rose Niewoehner while battling in the 235-pound bracket.

With the four wins, Stewart improved her season record to 16-1.

Charles City’s 115-pound sophomore Alexuz Ohlendorf went 3-2 for the day as her wins included a pair of falls and a technical-fall.

Ohlendorf’s season record is 11-8.

During the opening bracket rounds, Charles City defeated Bettendorf (44-33) before losing to Cedar Rapids Prairie (60-24) and Crestwood (45-28) while finishing fourth in its bracket.

In the subsequent pool-play round, Charles City lost to Vinton-Shellsburg (60-24) and Lake Mills (48-36).

Cedar Falls won “The Battle of Waterloo” after going 3-0 in the Championship Pool, including a 60-20 win over tournament runner-up Osage.
