DENVER — With a pair of championship performances, the Charles City Comets placed fourth amid 17 teams at Saturday’s Denver Girls Wrestling Invitational at the Cyclone Center.
With sophomore Sophia Calpito and senior Leah Stewart winning their respective 100- and 190-pound brackets, the Comets’ team-point total of 125.5 placed them behind champion Waverly-Shell Rock (198.5), Vinton-Shellsburg (156) and New Hampton-Turkey Valley (149).
Calpito improved her season record to 20-4 when she defeated Alburnett senior Josie McGraw in the championship match with a 15-3 major decision.
Stewart, a returning state-medalist, improved her season record to 19-1 when she defeated Denver senior Kennedy Burk in the championship match with a 8-0 major decision.
Comet 155-pound senior Destiny Kolheim, who — like Calpito and Stewart — is a returning state-qualifier, placed third in her bracket after falling to eventual champion, WSR freshman Amalia Djourmessi, in the semifinal round.
Other double-digit point scorers for the Comets included 120-pound junior Tegan Cavanaugh and 110-pound sophomore Emma Schmitt, who placed fourth and fifth in their respective brackets.
