Charles City senior Destiny Kolheim takes down Waukon freshman Mallory Howe during the 155-pound match of the Comets-at-Indians dual meet on Thursday night. Kolheim picked up a quick first-period fall victory while helping Charles City pull away in the latter matches on way to a 46-27 win.
Other Comets who earned contested wins against the Indians included Sophia Calpito (100), Chloe Calpito (105), Lilly Caster (115) and Brooklyn Warnke (190), who all earned fall victories; and Emma Schmitt (115) and Kinley Roths (135), who earned decision victories.
Charles City’s girls later earned a dual-meet victory over South Winneshiek by a team score of 54-12. Tegan Cavanaugh (115), Caster (120), Sophia Stevens (125) and Schmitt all earned fall victories for the Comets while battling the Warriors.
Charles City’s boys wrestling team also engaged in double-dual action at Waukon High School, but due in part to being outmanned, the Comets lost to the hosting Indians before falling to Caledonia (Minn.) in the latter dual.
Charles City did get some inspiring performances from heavyweights Jackson Warnke and Trevor Carolan, who respectively won their varsity and junior varsity matches against the Indians; and senior Carter Haberkorn, who defeated his Caledonia opponent in the 120-pound match when he scored a 3-point takedown during short time in the third period for a 7-6 victory.
Both Charles City teams will be back in action this Saturday with the boys traveling to Forest City and the girls traveling to Cedar Falls for weekend tournaments.
