CRESCO — For the most part this season, the Charles City Comets boys wrestling team is already defeated before the national anthem as the squad gives up too many open weights to seriously challenge more well-stocked opponents for dual-meet victories.

But it isn’t like the few Comets who get a chance to wrestle in these meets don’t put up a fight.

During one of the latter duals of Thursday’s triple-dual meet hosted by Crestwood, Charles City lost to South Winneshiek by a score of 48-17, but the Comets won four of the five matches contested against the Warriors.

The meet was concluded with the 126-pound bout that saw Charles City senior and former state-qualifier Carter Haberkorn pin SW freshman Matthew Donovan in 49 seconds.

In the 138-pound match, Comet sophomore Connor Jenkins got a 20-5 technical-fall victory over SW freshman Steven Andera midway through the second period.

In the following contested match at 190-pounds, Comet freshman Micah Thompson pinned SW sophomore Gavin Feickert at the 2:22 mark of their bout.

Earlier, Comet sophomore Carson Linde pinned SW freshman Earl Lienau 62 seconds into their 190-pound junior varsity match.

Charles City lost an earlier dual against Central Elkader (48-11) despite a heavyweight win by Comet junior Jackson Warnke.

The Comet boys will be back in action when they compete in Saturday’s tournament hosted by Anomosa High School.
