OSAGE — Charles City’s resident school-record holder in the girls discus and shot put, senior returning state and Drake Relays qualifier Leah Stewart, was victorious in both events for the second meet in a row during Tuesday’s Osage Girls Track and Field Meet.

Stewart winning throw in the discus was 111 feet, 4 inches; her winning throw in the discus was 37 feet, 3 ¾ inches — both short of the school records she set last season (128 feet, 6 inches; 41 feet, 5 inches).

There will likely be another Comet school record set in the near future — that in the long jump by Sophia Calpito. Last year as a freshman, Calpito was a state-qualifier and near medalist … and a near record setter with a personal-record leap of 17 feet, 6 ½ inches — 1 ½ inches from the record.

On Tuesday, Calpito didn’t compete in the long jump with Thursday’s meet at Decorah two days later. But she did compete in the 100-meter hurdles and recorded a winning time (16.17 seconds) more than a second ahead of runner-up, Alexis Rose of North Butler.

Calpito also anchored the Comets’ winning 4-by-100 relay (53.7 seconds) that also consisted of Joslyn Bormann, Elizah Causey and Emerson Bohlen.

With 132 team points, the Comets finished fourth behind Crestwood (265.5), Saint Ansgar (189) and New Hampton (139) amid the eight-team field.

At the Gerry Lenguadoro Cadet Relays hosted by Iowa Falls-Alden, the Charles City Comets won the boys 1,600 medley with a time of 3 minutes, 51.37 seconds.

It was the lone event win for the Comets, who placed sixth with 55 team points behind Dike-New Hartford (182), close runner-up Iowa Fall-Alden (181), Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (120), North Butler (96) and West Fork (73).
