CHARLES CITY — Back in the starting lineup to fill the No. 1 singles slot again after an injury kept her out of Tuesday’s dual against Decorah, Charles City sophomore Sofia Alinea surged late to pull away from Osage senior Sophia Ketelsen while winning the pro-set match 8-3 while setting the tone in the Comets’ 7-2 girls tennis win over the Green Devils, Thursday at Sportsmen’s Park.

Senior Anya Ruzicka defeated junior Mylie Havic 8-6 in No. 2 singles; senior Marissa Avelar bested junior Elle Sparrow 8-3 in No. 3 singles; and freshman Jacy Hall — recently moved up to No. 4 — made good on the lineup change in defeating senior Paige Mehmen 8-5 for the other Comet singles victories.

Charles City swept the doubles with Alinea and Ruzicka defeating Ketelsen and Mehmen at No. 1 (8-1); Avelar and senior Savannah Baldus defeating Havig and Sparros at No. 2 (8-6); and Hall and freshman Joselin Bonnstetter defeating Devil juniors Addie Sayer and Kylah Shoars at No. 3.

Sayer and Shoars were Osage’s two match winners at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Sayer defeated Baldus 8-3, and Shoars “reconnected” with junior Abrey Michael while winning 8-4 — Shoars and Michael were respective gold and silver medal winners in the Display category at State FFA this past weekend.

The Comets (4-2) will host Waverly-Shell Rock next Monday (April 21) at Sportsmen’s Park.
