CHARLES CITY — For the third time in as many meets, the Charles City girls golf team shot a 9-hole team score of 226.
The total came well short of New Hampton during the Comets’ season-opener at NH Golf and Country Club on April 11, and was only good enough for third place last Thursday (April 17) during a triangular hosted by Waverly-Shell Rock and including Crestwood at Waverly Municipal Golf Course.
But during the Comets’ home-opener on Monday against Decorah at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, the 226 team score proved to be good enough as it was 9 shots better than the Vikings for Charles City’s first victory of the season.
Comet senior Mya Rimrod, a returning All-Northeast Iowa Conference golfer from last season, achieved her first medalist score of the season with a 51 — 2 shots shy of her personal-best nine-hole score shot last season.
Though Cedar Ridge doesn’t pose too many water hazards, the back-nine course which was played for the dual meet was a water hazard in itself as there was plenty of standing water — even in the sand traps — after the rainy weekend.
Players were allowed to take “free relief”— playing the ball from a different place — whenever their shots landed in a puddle of water or a plot of mud.
Rounding out Charles City’s winning varsity squad against the Vikings were senior Isabel Crawford (56), sophomore Kinleigh Bahe (58) and sophomore Averi Wohlers (61).
The Comet girls (1-3) will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Osage at Sunny Brae Golf Course.
* Charles City’s boys golf team particpated in the 36-hole Dutch Masters Tournament over the weekend at Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella.
The Comets placed 15th out of 17 teams with an 18-hole score of 359 on Day 1 (Friday), then placed 13th out of 16 teams (341) on Day 2 (Saturday).
