CHARLES CITY — The Charles City Comets girls tennis team was able to claim the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches during its non-conference dual against Waverly-Shell Rock, Monday at Sportsmen’s Park.

But the Go-Hawks won the remaining seven varsity matches to win the dual 7-2.

Sophomore Sofia Alinea defeated WSR senior Adyson Huisenga with an 8-5 pro-set score at No. 1, and senior Anya Ruzicka got the better of a tiebreaker while defeating junior Natalie Beck 9-8 (7-5 TB) at No. 2.

The Comets were in the running for a couple more singles match victories, but came up short in both cases (9-7) as senior Marissa Avelar lost to sophomore Maddy Van Kley at No. 3, and freshman Joselin Bonnstetter lost to sophomore Gracie Gulick at No. 6.

Senior Megan Heyer defeated freshman Jacy Hall 8-3 at No. 4, and sophomore Neveah Dowlen defeated senior Savannah Baldus 8-3 at No. 5 for the other Go-Hawk singles victories.

Though they lost to them in singles play, Beck and Huisenga were able to best Alinea and Ruzicka 8-0 in No. 1 doubles.

Heyer and Van Kley defeated Avelar and Baldus 8-3 at No. 2 doubles; and Dowlen and Gulick defeated Bonnstetter and Hall 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Waverly-Shell Rock improved to 2-1; Charles City fell to 4-3 and will travel to Osage on Thursday.
